Famous Walnut Snacks

Whenever we go to my in-laws house which take about four hours drive, we usually stop over to resting area twice or three times to take a rest and buy something to eat. I usually buy coffee, dried octopus, and when I'm hungry and stopped at Cheonnan, I always buy walnut snack. Walnut snack looks like walnut with bean paste and some walnuts inside. Cheonan Walnut Snack is very famous in Korea. The walnut snacks in cheonan are the best, I think. They are also famous as presents.

Here's the walnut snack that is bought in Cheonan resting area. It's just 3,000 won (around $3). They are yummy no wonder they are famous. They are more delicious than other walnut snacks that I've tasted so far. When you start to taste them, you will never like the taste of the ones that are sold in the street specially downtown. They are incomparable.

Lotteria Hamburger

My hubby's office is near Lotteria, a hamburger shop like Mc Donalds or Jollibee but Lotteria is from Korea originally. They also have branches in Vietnam. I saw some of them when I visited there and maybe in Thailand, too. I may also see one there.

Sometimes, my hubby calls or sends me messages asking if I want to have a hamburger and if I say yes, he would bring a set of hamburger, coke, french fries, ice cream, and tacos or snack wrap.

But I have to eat with my hubby because I can't eat them all. We eat half of each but he always buys two snack wraps. They are yummy and not big enough to share or divide.

By the way, when we really crave for hamburgers, we sometimes get to be delivered at home. They also deliver hamburgers but you have to pay extra amount for the delivery fee and there are 24-hours shops open. One of them is in the other supermarket which is just 5-minutes away from our building.

Nanta Pizza and Chicken

My hubby came from work with this Nanta Pizza and Chicken. Cool! I'm so hungry so he came on time with pizza and chicken. I was about to cook noodles to obey my hunger but he came before I moved from my seat. It's really great to have this kind of fast food on weekend when the weather is cold and when you're lazy to move from lying on the sofa while watching TV.

Good job my dearest hubby! I'll help myself with this pizza and chicken.

Here! Would you like some?

Myeongpum Chicken

When I first came in Jeju Island, I laughed at the chicken shop named Myeongpum Chicken which means Find Article Chicken, Brand Chicken or chicken with a name. I thought it was so funny because I know lots of famous chicken restaurants like BHC, Nene Chicken, Mexicana Chicken, Pelicana Chicken, Gyocheon Chicken, BBQ Chicken, etc. (too many to mention) but this myeongpum chicken is new to me. Besides its name is Brand name so I wondered if it's really delicious as the ones that I've mentioned above. Anyway, my hubby also thought that the name is just a Brand name but it's not a shop with a brand name anyway. So we never tried to order in that restaurant.

But when my brother in law came to visit us, he mentioned about this Myeongpum chicken. He said it's famous in Jeju Island so he wanted to try it. My hubby said there's one near us but we never tried it so we ordered for my brother in law. Wow~ we never thought that it was delicious. We found out that the chicken restaurant is also a franchise brand in Jeju Island.

The chicken is delicious but too bad that it's just a little. It's not enough for three people. It's just good for two unlike other famous chicken restaurants, there's always left over when I eat with my hubby. But when we order myeongpum chicken, the amount is not enough for two of us. Anyway, here's the chicken.

And here are the contact numbers if you happen to visit Jeju and want to try Myeongpum Chicken.

Nanta Pizza

It was past 10p.m. and my hubby was craving for pizza. He looked for the number and ordered pizza. Actually, the pizza shop doesn't deliver until here in my place so hubby called to prepare the pizza and we picked it up. My hubby had 3 slices and I had one.

We ordered the cheese bite pizza with sweet potato mousse for only $10 at Nanta Pizza. Nanta 5000 Pizza is a korean pizza store that sells different kinds of pizza. You can have a pan of pizza for only 5,000 won around $5. I think it's where it got its name. But I don't recommend the 5,000won pizza. It's better to get the more expensive one which is more delicious of cours.

Kimchijeon

It was raining so I asked my hubby what he wanted to eat. He asked me what is delicious when it rains. I wasn't hungry so I couldn't think anything. Then he told me to make kimchijeon (kimchi jeon), a korean pancake-like dish made with kimchi and served with soy sauce.

Here's my own version of kimchijeon.
1. Chop the kimchi (old kimchi) and garlic.
2. Slice a half potato and half onion.
3. Put #1 and #2 in a big bowl and mix with flour.
4. Put some oil in a pan and fry the mixed ingredients.
5. Wait until it is brown.
For the sauce:
Pour some soy sauce and sesame oil in a saucer then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
7. Serve the kimchijeon with the sauce.

Kimchijeon is eaten as a side dish or snack.

Deep Fried Chicken in Soy Sauce (Taktwigimjorim)

Deep Fried Chicken in Soy Sauce (Taktwigimjorim)

Ingredients: 1 lb. chicken, 1 tbsp. rice wine, 1 tbsp. soy sauce, 1 green onion, 1 knob ginger, 1 cup corn starch powder, 1/2 round onion, 2 Korean green peppers, 1/2 carrot, 2 cloves garlic, 1/3 cup sweet sauce, 2 oz. cabbage, 1/2 cucumber, 4 olive, tomato

Method:

1. Halve the whole chicken. Sprinkle the chicken with the rice wine and soy sauce and top it with the sliced ginger and round onion and steam it in a steamer.

2. Cut the steamed chicken into pieces. Dip them in flour and deep-fry them in oil.

3. Cut the round onion and green peppers into large pieces. Cut the carrot into crescent-shaped pieces and the garlic in flat pieces.

4. Fry the #3 vegetables in an oiled pan. Add the chicken and sweet sauce and simmer until glazed.

5. Place the cabbage, cucumber, and carrot cut into thin strips in a glassware dish and garnish with the olives and tomato. Serve this salad with the chicken.

Hint: To make the sweet sauce: Combine 1 cup nicely aged soy sauce, 1/2 lb grain syrup (like dark corn syrup), 1/2 cup sugar, 2/3 cup water, 1 oz. ginger cut in flat pieces, 1/4 cup rice wine, 1 tbsp. black pepper and MSG in a pan and simmer on low heat until thick.

teriyaki

When we go somewhere and use the expressway, we usually stopped by at the hyugesu or resting area to go to the bathroom and buy something to eat. We usually buy juipo but last time, when we went to my inlaws house to celebrate the Seollal, we saw this small store selling teriyaki. I forgot the exact name but it's teriyaki something. They are expensive but delicious. Eight pieces for $3. They are made of octopus. Hubby bought it when he went to the bathroom. I just stayed in the car that time because it was too cold and i didn't want to go out. But after eating it, i went out and bought again.

I sometimes crave for it. Next time that we happened to dropped by there, i will surely buy it again. I hope it is still there. I'm just worried that it will be bankrupted because of all the stores, that teriyaki store has the less customers. I only saw one kid buying with me. Maybe because it is still new and people haven't tasted it, yet.

apples and sweet potato

We also met my mother in law when we attended my sister in law's housewarming party. We picked her up at home and we went to my sister in law's house together. There were 2 packs of apples that were put in the plastic bags. One is for my sister in law and she gave to other one to us. We always skip breakfast and i always prepare fruit milkshake for hubby before he leaves for work. And these apples are for his milkshake in the morning. My inlaws told me that apples are not good to eat in the evening. We don't have enough time to eat in the afternoon because we have to work so i usually make apple milkshake in the morning.

Before we came home, my sister in law gave me this sweet potato. Oh gosh, i can't remember the last time when i ate sweet potato so i was happy to receive them. As soon as i came home, i cooked some but wasn't satisfied because i put much water and overcooked. They are sweet but very soft that's why until now they are still on the table. hehehe...

Beungoeppang

There are many kinds of delicious food or snacks sold in winter. I like most of them specially ho-tteok and tteokpokki.

Another delicious snacks during the winter season is Beungeoppang. Bungeo is a type of fish and ppang means bread. It is sold by open-air food vendors throughout Korea.

Beungeoppang is a fish-shaped korean pastry but doesn't contain any fish. It has red bean paste inside and the outside part that covered the bean paste tastes like waffle. It is delicious when it served hot.

Beungeoppang is also sold with eomug.
